DIY motorcycle wheelie machine: what to know before you build

9

Thinking about building a wheelie machine instead of buying one? Here are the things worth knowing before you cut any steel. Everything below comes from our 73-page wheelie machine plans, which we checked ourselves.

Before you build

What size damper do I need?

It depends on your bike. The drawing has a marked place for a damper under the motorcycle, but the size isn’t fixed, because every model sits differently. Measure your own bike first and choose the damper to suit it.

I work in inches. Can I still use the plans?

Yes, but convert first. All dimensions on the drawings are in millimetres, so convert the measurements you need before you buy material or start cutting.

Do I need a welder?

Yes, or someone who can weld for you. The plans have a separate “Welded parts” section.

What wheels and bearings should I buy?

Wheels up to 260 mm in diameter, tyres up to 90 mm wide, and sealed ball bearings with a 20 mm inner diameter. Each wheel should carry at least 130 kg. The front wheel axles are M20x100 bolts.

Is there a shopping list?

No, the materials list isn’t included. Work from the list of parts and assemblies and the drawings, and write your own list before you order steel, fasteners and bearings.
