How much oil does the S1000XR take, and which type?
About 3.5 litres with a filter change. Use 5W-40 fully synthetic oil to API SL / JASO MA2; BMW recommends its own oil.
What are the valve clearances?
With the engine cold, the inlet clearance is 0.11-0.20 mm and the exhaust clearance is 0.26-0.35 mm.
Which chain and sprockets does it use?
A 525 O-ring chain with 128 links, a 17-tooth front sprocket and a 45-tooth rear sprocket.
Does the S1000XR vibrate?
Owners say it varies from bike to bike. Where it shows, it is mostly in a narrow band around 5,200-5,400 rpm. Some owners use cruise control on the motorway to rest their hands.
My heated grips don’t get very hot. Is that normal?
Several owners of early bikes found the heated grips weak. Dealers replaced them under warranty with the newer GS-type grips, which work well.
